SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake has had several good scoring chances in front of their home crowd, but it took 26 minutes until Forster Ajago found the team’s first goal.
On Wednesday, February 26, RSL hosted C.S. Herediano at America First Field in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Ajago had a shot at goal early in the match, but a poor touch sent the ball sailing harmlessly.
Minutes later, the Dominik Marczuk to Ajago combination bore fruit for RSL. Marczuk sent a perfect centering pass to Ajago eight yards in front of the net. The first-year Real Salt Lake striker deftly beat Dany Carvahal just inside the right post to grab a 1-0 lead.
The goal ended a 205-minute scoring drought for Real Salt Lake to open 2025.

RSL-C.S. Herediano battle to a scoreless draw in Costa Rica
Scoring chances were few and far between in the opening leg of the Champions Cup. C.S. Herediano looked like the stronger squad for most of the match but couldn’t convert that into a goal. RSL was outshot 17-7 and 5-2 in shots on goal.
RSL lost Alexandros Katranis to an injury 20 minutes in.

In the 25th minute, RSL had another scoring chance. Forster Ajago broke loose and entered the box with a head of steam. Herediano goalkeeper Dany Carvajal came off his line to cut off the angle, making a nice stop to keep the match scoreless.
Herediano outshot RSL 8-3 in the opening half, but the Claret & Cobalt logged the only shot on goal in the opening 45.
Pablo Ruiz entered in the 75th minute, returning to the pitch less than a year after he was lost with a knee injury in 2024. Real Salt Lake looked to have a goal on a beautifully placed corner from Ruiz. Sam Junqua rose above the defense to redirect the ball toward the goal, but an unfortunate deflection sent the shot wide.
The final minutes were uneventful in RSL’s first on-field competition of 2025.
