SALT LAKE CITY – Former Real Salt Lake striker Bobby Wood will join the New England Revolution after being selected in the MLS Re-Entry Draft on Tuesday.

Wood, 30, was selected as the number one overall pick after the Revolution traded up to select the former United States national team player.

Bobby Wood At Real Salt Lake

Wood joined Real Salt Lake in April of 2021 following a decade of playing professionally in Germany. While in Germany, Wood spent time with 1860 Munich, Union Berlin, Hamburger SV, and Hannover 96.

While at Real Salt Lake, Wood struggled with multiple injuries that ultimately derailed his experience and playing time. However, when healthy Wood proved to be a pivotal player in the system under manager Pablo Mastroeni.

Wood appeared in 31 games for the Claret and Cobalt and managed to score 5 goals. The 2022 season began with Wood playing his best football to date in the United States, he, alongside Sergio Cordova, created a dangerous partnership for Real Salt Lake at the point of attack.

However, Wood went down with injury midway through the 2022 campaign and was sidelined for the remainder of the season after undergoing abductor surgery in the summer. The club was hopeful that Wood would return to the starting XI ahead of the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs but complications in his recovery resulted in a second surgery being performed weeks prior to the playoffs starting.

Now, Wood will begin a new chapter on the East Coast under legendary United States manager Bruce Arena. Wood is running out of time to cement his legacy playing in Major League Soccer, following multiple injuries, and multiple new clubs, Wood is hopeful to play consistently in New England.

Furthermore, Wood has also appeared in 45 caps for the United States national team. His last call-up occurred in 2018.

Change Occurring At Real Salt Lake

News of Wood departing Real Salt Lake officially comes just days after fellow striker Sergio Cordova announced on Twitter that he does not think that he will return to Real Salt Lake as well.

Assuming Cordova does not return, the club will look to sign multiple forwards throughout the upcoming offseason. The 2023 Real Salt Lake lineup will inevitably look very different at the point of the attack in 2023.
