SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake looked like the lesser team to open the match, but a quick strike from Ariath Piol gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
RSL (1-1-0, 3 points) hosted expansion San Diego FC (1-0-1, 4 points) at America First Field on Saturday, March 8.

Diego Luna took possession near midfield and created the play from the beginning. The masked Luna skipped a pass toward the goal.
Dominik Marczuk made a great touch, settling the ball outside the 18-yard box. After a couple of dribbles, Marczuk dropped the ball off to Piol. The first-year RSL forward opened his MLS account with the goal.
AVR was used to look at a potential handball, but the goal stood.
RSL Opens Home Slate With Win Over Sounders
After Seattle gave RSL a gift in the form of an own goal, Real capitalized on the mistake. The Sounders struggled to find any breathing room in their attacking third, thanks to a tenacious defense from Real Salt Lake.
RSL took the early advantage at America First Field and didn’t have to work too hard for it.
In the eighth minute, a miscommunication between Seattle defender Nouhou Tolo and goalkeeper Stefan Frei ended in an own goal and a 1-0 lead for the home club.
Real maintained the advantage through the first half. Despite a handful of chances to extend the advantage, Real Salt Lake took a 1-0 lead into the half.
