Tony Finau To Sit Out A Week, Return For The Players Championship

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – PGA Tour professional Tony Finau is taking a short hiatus from tournament play but is planning on returning for The Players Championship starting on March 11th.

Finau, 31, has been in remarkable form as of late with three consecutive 2nd place finishes before a tied for 14th finish last week at the WGC Workday Championship in Florida.

Career Best Form

He has never hit the golf ball as consistently or pure in his entire career.

Through the first two months of the year, he has earned more Official World Golf Ranking points than anybody else in the world. He ranks 14th in the OWGR and 5th in the FedEx Cup standings.

This week, Finau is opting to rest and not compete at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Instead, he will prepare for the following week when he takes on TPC Sawgrass at The Players Championship with hopes of securing a share of the $15 million prize fund.

Will Finau Ever Breakthrough?

Unfortunately, despite playing the best golf of his career, the pressure continues to mount on Finau who is yet to win his second PGA Tour event since his lone victory at the Puerto Rico Open in 2016. Since his only win, Finau has finished in the top 5, 10, and 25 more than any other player who has not won on the PGA Tour.

Despite the growing frustration, Finau continues to remain optimistic that his breakout event is forthcoming. In multiple interviews over the past few months, Finau has been asked and spoken freely about his inability to close tournaments strongly.

“Usually when I walk off the 72nd hole I have a pretty good sense of how long it’s going to sting. I’m pretty encouraged right now,” Finau said immediately following his loss at The American Express. “I’ve got to get a little bit better to win again, so it’s an encouraging week on a lot of levels.”
