SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has made the cut and progressed up the leaderboard following his second round at the Genesis Open.

Finau began the day at even par and seven shots behind the leader. He ended the day and will enter the weekend eight shots behind the leader after shooting a second-round four-under-par, 67.

Finau’s round began off the first tee which he was able to birdie. His hot start continued when he was also able to birdie holes three, five, and eight. His only bogey on the front nine came on the par 4 seventh hole. He made the turn at three-under-par.

The back nine did not start with how Finau would have intended after he bogeyed the par 4 tenth. An immediate response came on hole 11 when he birdied the par 5 after a beautiful chip to tap in the birdie from four feet. His last bogey came on hole 15 but birdies the 16th and 17th hole to finish with a final score of four-under-par.

Big Weekend Upcoming

Unlike yesterday, Finau was rolling the ball on the greens on Friday. Riviera Country Club, the host of this week’s event, is known for incredibly fast and smooth Poa annua greens.

Despite Finau’s impressive second round, it remains unlikely that he will secure his second PGA Tour victory. With 36 holes remaining, he finds himself eight shots behind the leader Sam Burns.

Finau will need to climb the leaderboard at a rapid pace to catch Burns while also hoping that Burns struggles over the final two days.

Other Notables

Other notable players in the field include Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay who all find themselves at six-under-par and in a tie for sixth. Brooks Koepka tied with Finau with a two-round score of four-under-par. While Rory MclLroy, Bryson Dechambeau, and Justin Thomas all missed the cut.

Weekend tee times are yet to be announced.
