SALT LAKE CITY – BYU football running back LJ Martin has grown from a true freshman to a true do-it-all back for the Cougars.
Head coach Kalani Sitake highlighted his progression and what he expects to see from him in 2025.
“LJ Martin is soft-spoken but looking to be more of a leader,” Sitake said. “He understands the need for him to do it. Anytime there’s been a challenge, he’s always risen to it and met it. See him grow up from a true freshman to a seasoned veteran, the game of football is becoming a lot easier for him. His vision has been amazing since he got here, his ability to break open plays, and break tackles. That’s why he is RB1. He is willing to do whatever it takes, he’s been progressing nicely, and he’s probably the most complete back we’ve had in a long time.”
Martin was ranked 18th on our 60 in 60 list last season.
See where he gets placed on this year’s list after the 2025 College Football season.
About BYU’s LJ Martin
With a father, John, who played basketball at Western New Mexico, and a mother, Genevieve, who played softball at Western New Mexico, it’s no surprise LJ Martin developed into a terrific athlete.
Martin was rated a three-star prospect and the No. 37 running back in the nation by 247Sports.com coming out of Canutillo High School in 2022. The 2022 Texas 5A MVP rushed for 2,137 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior.
Amazingly, that production paled to Martin’s 2021 accomplishments. The 6’2, 225-pound back accounted for 3,144 yards on offense while finding the endzone 37 times. He ran for 2,737 yards and 29 touchdowns; caught 15 balls for 376 yards and a TD; completed two passes, including a touchdown throw; and took a kickoff back for a touchdown.

Martin’s athleticism also shined on the hardwood as he was a two-time all-district first-team selection for the Eagles.
In 2023 as a true freshman, he led the Cougars with 518 yards (4.7 yards per carry) and four rushing scores. Martin ran for a season-high 93 yards, including a career-long 55-yard gallop against Texas Tech.
Last season, Martin posted 137 carries for 718 yards and seven touchdowns. He added 10 receptions for 98 yards and two scores through the air.
