Former BYU OL Blake Freeland Sets NFL Scouting Combine Record

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Herriman High standout and BYU Cougars offensive lineman Blake Freeland set a new record at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine and impressed in multiple drills.

The Combine takes place from February 27-March 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Freeland and the other offensive linemen at the event participated in on-field drills on Sunday, March 5.

The former BYU standout had a massive day at the home of the Indianapolis Colts. Freeland set a new Combine record for offensive linemen with a vertical jump of 37 inches.

Freeland’s vertical feat even bested some of the league’s top wide receivers over the years including:

  • AJ Brown (36.5)
  • Michael Pittman (36.5)
  • DeAndre Hopkins (36.0)
  • Stefon Diggs (35.0)
  • CeeDee Lamb (34.5)
  • Amari Cooper (33.0)

In addition to his giant jump, Freeland impressed with his speed and quickness in the Combine’s signature 40-yard dash. Freeland opened the drill with an unofficial time of 4.99u seconds on his first sprint.

On Freeland’s second attempt, the offensive lineman posted an even better time at 4.96 seconds (unofficial).

During the NFL’s Players Only broadcast of the Combine on NFL+, Freeland was compared to one of the league’s best offensive linemen, Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Freeland is taller than Johnson and has a higher vertical. Johnson is one pound heavier than Freeland. Both players own 1.68-second 10-yard splits.

Prior to the Combine, Freeland was projected as a second or third round pick in mock drafts.
