SALT LAKE CITY – The Weber State men’s basketball team shot lights out on the road and captured a blowout victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs.

The Mustangs hosted the Wildcats at Robert A. Mott Athletics Center on Friday, December 16.

Weber State cruised to a 74-45 victory.

The Wildcats shot a blazing 52.9 percent overall and 50.0 percent on three-pointers in their 29-point rout.

The contest started as a tight battle and was knotted up at 11 apiece following the first seven and a half minutes of action. However, Weber State started to pull away at the midway point of the opening half.

The Wildcats built their lead to 15 points for a halftime advantage of 40-25.

After coming out of the locker room for the second half, Weber State continued to push the pedal to the metal. The Mustangs quickly found themselves down by 20 points and as the seconds ticked off the clock during the final minutes of game time, the Wildcats had pushed their lead to nearly 30.

Four Wildcats finished the game scoring in double figures. Steven Verplancken Jr. led the way with 15 points on 6-8 field goals, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. Dillon Jones and Dyson Koehler combined for 23 points to assist Verplancken in Weber State’s starting five.

Junior Ballard carried the Wildcats’ bench with 14 points on 5-8 shooting.

The Wildcats owned large advantages in multiple statistical categories, including rebounds and assists.

The well-rounded performance resulted in Weber State’s second consecutive victory. It was the Wildcats’ first time posting back-to-back wins this season.

With the win, the Wildcats improved their record to 4-7. Weber State’s next game is on the road against the Utah State Aggies. The Aggies will host the Wildcats on Monday, December 19 at 7 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on KSL Sports Zone.

ESPN Analytics currently gives Weber State a 6.2 percent chance at pulling off the upset in Logan. The Aggies sit at 9-0 this season, including 6-0 at home.
