Weber State Basketball Starts Slow In Loss To Wright State In Las Vegas

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State men’s basketball team struggled in the first half and couldn’t recover as they fell to Wright State in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Wright State outscored Weber State 52-32 in the first half before the Wildcats dropped 33 points in the second half, while the Raiders had 35 points.

Steven Verplancken led the Wildcats with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 from the three-point line. Junior Ballard was the only other Weber State player to score in double figures with 10 points.

Rebounding was an issue for Weber State as they pulled down 25 rebounds compared to 36 from Wright State. The Wildcats shot 33% from the field, 37% from the three-point line, and 93% at the free throw line.

In the first half, Weber State shot just 31% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. Points in the paint went in favor of the Raiders, 34-18.

For Wright State, Brandon Noel led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while shooting 10-of-11 from the field. Trey Calvin dropped 14 points and 10 assists on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Alex Huibregtse chipped in 13 points and six assists, while both Tim Finke and Amari Davis each scored 10 points.

The Raiders shot 65% from the field, 44% from the three-point line, and 83% at the foul line.

Weber State left Las Vegas with a win over Abilene Christian on Tuesday and a loss to Wright State. They are now 2-4 on the season with wins over ACU and Western Colorado. They have losses to Wright State, Washington, Colorado State, and UC Riverside.

The Wildcats will have nearly one week off before heading to Stephenville, Texas to face Tarleton State on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. MT on ESPN+ and 103.1 FM “The Wave.” Weber State will then return home to face Utah Tech on Saturday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. MT.
