Weber State Commits FCS-Record Four Safeties In Loss To Montana State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Weber State Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season after committing an FCS-record four safeties to Montana State.

The four safeties by Weber State was the difference in the game, which gave Montana State eight points.

Both teams were ranked in the top 10 entering the Big Sky clash in Bozeman.

How Weber State Lost To Montana State

The Wildcats started the game with a field goal by Kyle Thompson to put them up 3-0. The first safety of the game happened four minutes later and Montana State was within one, 3-2.

Tommy Mellott’s 42-yard rushing touchdown put Montana State ahead 9-3 with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Abraham Williams returned it 100-yards for a touchdown to give Weber State a 10-9 lead. Four minutes later, the Wildcats got another special teams score as Hudson Schenck took a punt return 91 yards for a touchdown and WSU was up 17-9 with 1:08 remaining in the first.

Weber State extended their lead to 24-9 after a rushing TD by Damon Bankston. The second safety of the game came with 6:19 remaining in the first half and cut WSU’s lead to 24-11. Mellott ran in another score to put the Bobcats within six. The third safety came with 1:39 left in the first half and put MSU within four, 24-20.

Mellott threw a 15-yard touchdown to Derryk Snell with 59 seconds left in the first half and the Bobcats had a 27-24 lead at the break. Early in the third quarter was the fourth safety by Weber State. Almost two minutes later, Montana State scored another touchdown on the ground with Mellott. The Bobcats were ahead 36-24 with 10:35 left in the third quarter. Another rushing touchdown by MSU put them up 43-24 late in the third. With 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Bronson Barron threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Ty MacPherson.

Weber State scored a rushing touchdown with Barron with 6:49 left and the Bobcats held on from that point. Barron completed 14 of his 30 pass attempts for 151 yards and one touchdown through the air and ran the ball 13 times for 57 yards and one TD.

Weber State dropped their record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big Sky play. They will return to Stewart Stadium on Saturday, October 29 to host Montana at 1:00 p.m. MT on ESPN+ and 103.1 FM “The Wave.”
