SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell might be the only New York Mets fan who hasn’t abandoned the team amid their players’ new anti-booing protest.

The Mets have gone 8-19 in the month of August, falling from first place in the National League East to third, and now sitting seven games out of the wild card. During the free-fall, Mets fans have booed the team as another season has fallen by the wayside. ‘

On Sunday, Mets second basemen Javier Báez, who was acquired less than a month ago near the trade deadline admitted that the team’s recent trend of showing two thumbs down after any successful Mets play was directed at the fans in retaliation for their booing.

“When we don’t get success, we’re going to get booed,” Báez told the New York media. “So they’re going to get booed when we have success.”

Though backlash against the Mets players has been swift, including from the team’s owner, the Jazz’s Mitchell seemed to enjoy the absurdity of the situation.

“I’m here for it,” Mitchell tweeted in response to Báez’s new approach.

Mitchell is a die-hard Mets fan and many of his tweets are directed in support of the organization.

The All-Star guard has familiar ties to the team as his father, Donovan Sr., is the Mets director of player relations.

Perhaps more so than he was supporting the players’ response to the fans, Mitchell liked the results the weekend’s games.

The Mets won consecutive games for only the third time during August after beating the Washington Nationals 9-4 on Sunday.

There may be more winning on the way for Mitchell and the Mets as they begin a three-game series with the lowly Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
