Depleted Jazz Fall Short In Overtime Loss To Lakers

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A reduced Utah Jazz roster fell short of victory and suffered an overtime road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers hosted the Jazz at Staples Center on Saturday, April 17.

Utah played without three starters in Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, and Mike Conley. Jazz center Derrick Favors also sat out against Los Angeles.

Despite playing with a limited roster, the Jazz played well for the majority of the contest before falling in overtime, 127-115.

How It Happened

Because of the lack of personnel, the Jazz played some unique lineups that fans hadn’t seen this season. Without three starters, sixth man Jordan Clarkson was inserted into the starting lineups, as well as Joe Ingles and Ersan Ilyasova.

Utah battled in the first half and played well considering the fact that the team was missing four major pieces of the regular rotation.

The Jazz trailed the Lakers by only three points at halftime.

In the third quarter, Utah’s wheels fell off a little bit. The Jazz were sloppy to start the second half and committed eight turnovers in the quarter. Utah was outscored by nine points in the third.

The fourth quarter was a different story.

Utah began to make shots and played better defense. The combination got the Jazz back into the ballgame.

The Jazz held the Lakers scoreless for nearly six and a half minutes during the final quarter.

Los Angeles didn’t score from the 10:28 mark until the 4:00 mark and the Jazz went on a 15-0 run during the stretch.

It’s the first time this season that the Jazz have gone on a run of 10-0 or greater and lost a game.

During the final minutes of regulation, the Laker sand Jazz went back-and-forth with each other.

With the Jazz trailing by one, Clarkson buried a massive triple to give Utah the lead with 9.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Dennis Schröder scored a game-tying layup with 3.5 seconds to go and the game went to overtime.

During the extra five minutes, the Jazz were out of gas and weren’t even able to run on fumes.

Los Angeles dominated the overtime period and outscored Utah, 17-5.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz ended the contest shooting 41.6 percent from the field and 23-59 for 39.0 percent from three.

Utah’s five starters all scored in double figures.

The Jazz were led by Clarkson’s 27 points on 11-27 shooting, including 5-15 from downtown.

Ilyasova and Ingles poured in 20 points apiece. Ingles also had a double-double with 14 assists. Ilyasova buried six three-pointers, five of which came in the opening quarter.

Bojan Bodanovic scored 19 points and Royce O’Neale added 14 points.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers played without their star players, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who were out due to injury.

Los Angeles finished the game shooting 51.6 percent overall and 33.3 percent from distance.

The Lakers had six players double figures and were led by Andre Drummond’s 27 points.

Schröder and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope each scored 25 points.

Up Next

With the loss, the Jazz fell to 42-15 on the season, including 16-12 on the road. Utah still owns the league’s best record but is now tied in the loss column in the Western Conference standings with the Phoenix Suns.

Utah’s next game is the second in a row against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers will host the Jazz on Monday, April 19 at 8 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on ESPN and 97.5 FM.
