NFL Players Vote To Ratify New Collective Bargaining Agreement For League

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Players voted to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement for the NFL that will run through 2030.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association voted on the agreement which passed with a vote of 1,019-959 at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, the league announced.

“We are pleased that the players have voted to ratify the proposed new CBA, which will provide substantial benefits to all current and retired players, increase jobs, ensure continued progress on player safety, and give our fans more and better football,” Goodell said in the statement. “We appreciate the tireless efforts of the members of the Management Council Executive Committee and the NFLPA leadership, both of whom devoted nearly a year to detailed, good faith negotiations to reach this comprehensive, transformative agreement.”

The new CBA begins with the upcoming 2020 season and will run through the next 11 seasons.

“NFL players have voted to approve ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement by a vote tally of 1,019 to 959,” the NFLPA said in a statement. “This result comes after a long and democratic process in accordance with our constitution. An independent auditor received submitted ballots through a secure electronic platform, then verified, tallied and certified the results.”

These are some of the notable changes in the new deal:

  • The expected addition of two more teams to the playoffs as early as 2020
  • The option to add a 17th game to the regular season schedule beginning in 2021
  • Increased minimum salaries
  • Increased performanced-based pay
  • Increased player revenue
  • Increased benefits for retired players
  • Only one franchise or transition tag can be used by teams in the 2020 offseason.

NFL team owners first approved the CBA for a player vote on February 20.

The new NFL league year and free agency begin on Wednesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. (MDT).
