SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – On the day that his signature sneaker with Adidas was launched, Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell wrote an article in the Players’ Tribune titled “The Dream” and his mother Nicole was the guest editor.

The Jazz star guard started the article by talking about his childhood and constantly running around without a destination. His mother called him “exuberant.”

Donovan and Nicole exchanged stories on keeping him on a harness so he wouldn’t run off in stores.

The story shifts to when he went to a school 30 minutes from his house in Greenwich, Connecticut. He talked about how different of a world it was from where he lived and the school was just 30 minutes away.

Nicole was all about education and not focusing on sports for Donovan.

But Donovan was playing AAU basketball and would have to travel around New York and New Jersey with his mother for tournaments. A great part of the story on the Players’ Tribune (link above) was when he dunked for the first time in the summer before he was in eighth grade. He ran to the parking lot to tell his mom that he dunked and she was happy for him.

In the car ride after, she asked Donovan what exactly makes it a dunk.

Donovan never understood until later in life how much his mother sacrificed for him.

He talked about almost quitting basketball when he was at Louisville after shooting 25 percent from downtown.

After reading this, it shows how much Donovan cares about his mother and the influence she has on him and helped him through life and taught him to be humble. That has translated to the way he interacts with fans and the community in Salt Lake City.

Adidas posted a 10-minute video of Mitchell’s journey on the Players’ Tribune article.
