LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Utah Royals fought hard but ultimately left Lynn Family Stadium empty-handed with a 3-2 loss to Racing Louisville FC on Friday.

The Royals struck first and later equalized to have the score tied at 2-2 going into halftime. However, a second yellow for Ana Tejada was followed by a Louisville score, and they held on to secure the 3-2 win in front of the home crowd.

Utah is now winless in its last six and has yet to pick up three points on the road. Both of the next two games will be played in Utah.

First Half

Momentum is massively important, and the Royals have found themselves playing from behind for much of this season.

Determined to start strong, Utah came out of the gates aggressively. The early pace and pressure paid off as Brecken Mozingo slipped a shot under the defense to open the scoring in the third minute.

It was Mozingo’s third goal of the season — and her third in as many games.

The lead didn’t last long, though.

Emma Sears equalized about five minutes later, and then Ellie Jean put Louisville in front with a header goal in the 26th minute.

Once again facing a deficit, the Royals hit the gas. Kate Del Fava spotted Bianca St-Georges charging into the final third and threaded a perfect lead pass. St-Georges drew out Racing goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer and chipped in the equalizer to make it 2-2.

St-Georges and Sears traded shots as each forward looked for a brace, but the first half ended with the score still level.

At the break, Utah held the advantage in time of possession and shot attempts.

Second Half

It was truly a tale of two halves in Kentucky.

The first saw action early and often, while the second turned into a game of patience as each side waited for the other to slip up.

Ally Sentnor put two shots on target in the first 10 minutes after the break, but Bloomer was up to the task. The Louisville defense took the early pressure as a wake-up call, and Utah didn’t register another shot on goal for the remainder of regulation.

Utah’s back line was equally sharp. Louisville managed just one shot on frame in the first 35 minutes of the half. In the 70th, Lauren Milliet threatened from a tough angle, but Mandy McGlynn made the save at the center of the net.

Trouble hit the Royals in the 73rd minute when Tejada received her second yellow card, resulting in her ejection and leaving Utah down a player.

The momentum clearly shifted after the ejection.

Louisville lined up six shots in the next ten minutes. The Royals held strong — two missed, three were saved, and one was blocked. But every defense has a breaking point.

That point came in the 85th minute, when Sarah Weber scored her first NWSL goal to put Louisville ahead 3-2.

Four minutes of stoppage time were added.

But, at a player and momentum disadvantage, the Royals were unable to create some late magic.

The final whistle blew, and Utah’s winless streak was extended to six games.
