SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Weber State men’s basketball head coach Randy Rahe said that his “heart is broken” right now and that his team “will be part of change” in regards to the fight against inequality and racial injustice.

Rahe released a statement about the current “unrest in our country” via his Twitter account on Wednesday, June 3.

“Our hearts are broken during this time of unrest in our country. All life is precious and diversity should be valued and celebrated. As a staff and team, we recognize the opportunity and responsibility to make a positive impact in the lives of our student-athletes and the great community we are proud to be a part of,” Rahe said. “We will use our platform at Weber State University for more important issues than basketball. We will live with integrity, compassion, hope, and loving-kindness for all humanity. We will move forward, together as part of the solution.”

The statement was released one day after the Wildcats program and the head coach supported the “Blackout Tuesday” national movement on social media.

On June 2, a nationwide movement called “Blackout Tuesday” took place to amplify the voices of black people on social media. The movement began in the music industry with Atlantic Records and spread across all platforms of social media. Users posted a black square to their profile, using #blackouttuesday.
