PROVO, Utah – At long last, the 2025 BYU football schedule has arrived.
The Big 12 Conference unveiled its 2025 schedule for year two of the 16-team league.
Big 12 football schedules for the past two years were released near the end of January. The 2025 schedule was released a few days later than usual in February.
It was a highly-anticipated release as BYU football has high expectations entering year three in the league.
BYU finished the 2024 season with an 11-2 overall record and a 7-2 mark in Big 12 play. The Cougars missed the Big 12 Championship Game due to a tiebreaker, but they still had a memorable year, finishing No. 13 in the final AP Top 25 ranking last season.

Nonconference Schedule
BYU football will host Portland State (August 30) from the Big Sky Conference in the FCS to open the 2025 season. After facing the Vikings for the first time since 2017, BYU welcomes Stanford to Provo for the first time since 2003.
Stanford, who is heading into their second year in the ACC, will be BYU’s required Power Conference opponent in nonconference.
The Cougars close nonconference play on September 20, 2,231 miles away from Provo in Greenville, North Carolina, against the East Carolina Pirates. East Carolina has won the previous two meetings against BYU in 2017 and 2022.
Alamo Bowl Rematch in the Rockies
One of the most intriguing games on the 2025 BYU football schedule is the September 27 trip to Boulder to face “Coach Prime” and the Colorado Buffaloes.

Last year, BYU crushed Colorado in an All-Big 12 Alamo Bowl matchup in San Antonio, 36-14. Will the new-look Buffs without Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders have revenge on their mind?
BYU will be making its first trip to Boulder since 1981.
Year Two of the BYU/Utah rivalry in the Big 12
The BYU/Utah rivalry made an epic introduction to the Big 12 with a 22-21 last-second thriller that featured a game-winning field goal from BYU kicker Will Ferrin.

The Big 12 is placing BYU vs. Utah in the spot that the Texas/Oklahoma rivalry used to occupy in the middle of October. BYU will host the Utes for homecoming on October 18.
Last year, the Big 12 took some heat for placing the highly-anticipated rivalry game on an outside-the-box date of November 9. That was three weeks earlier than the final weekend of the regular season.
While it was strange to see the game early, it delivered a strong late-night audience (2 million viewers). BYU’s undefeated record and ranking of No. 9 in the College Football Playoff helped the cause.
Big 12 Home Opener: West Virginia Mountaineers make first trip to Provo
The Mountaineers will be trading out Country Roads for the Wasatch Front on Friday, October 3 when they visit Provo for the first time.

West Virginia is going back to the future after hiring Rich Rodriguez to return as head coach. Rodriguez put together some of the best offenses in college football during his first stint at his alma mater from 2001 to 2007.
BYU last faced West Virginia in Jake Retzlaff’s first career start in 2023. The Mountaineers steamrolled BYU, 37-7 in Morgantown.
Scott Frost leads UCF out west in cold conditions for BYU Senior Day
Like West Virginia, UCF turned to the past to reignite its future.

The Knights hired Scott Frost to replace Gus Malzahn as their new head coach. Frost was previously at UCF from 2016 to 2017. He led the Knights to an undefeated season in 2017.
The November 29 matchup will be UCF’s first visit to Provo since 2011 and will close out BYU’s 2025 regular season.
It will be UCF’s first time closing out the regular season away from the state of Florida since 2014.
BYU football travels to Lubbock for the first time since 1940
As BYU continues settling into life in the Big 12 Conference, the novelty of certain matchups and visits is disappearing. But a trip to Texas Tech in Lubbock on November 8 is something that hasn’t been done in 85 years.

Texas Tech will be an intriguing team in 2025. For the 2025 cycle, they’ve loaded up with one of the best Transfer Portal classes in the country.
Kalani Sitake looks to maintain a perfect record against Arizona
Under 10th-year head coach Kalani Sitake, BYU football is 4-0 against the Arizona Wildcats. Sitake will look to keep that perfect mark against Arizona on October 11 in Tucson.
Interestingly, this will be the first time a Sitake-coached BYU team faces an Arizona coach for the second time. The previous four meetings were against different Arizona head coaches (Rich Rodriguez, Kevin Sumlin, Jedd Fisch).
Arizona’s second-year head coach, Brent Brennan, will look to get the Wildcats back on track after a disappointing 4-8 record in 2024.
First BYU/TCU matchup in Provo since the Mountain West era
It’s been 16 years since the TCU Horned Frogs last played in Provo. That was when the two programs were rivals in the Mountain West Conference. That meeting in 2009 was the only time BYU football has hosted ESPN’s College Gameday.
The rivalry doesn’t seem to have carried over into the Big 12, but fans who experienced those old MWC battles still feel nostalgic. We’ll see if the old days are rekindled on November 15.
TCU put together a strong bounce-back season, finishing 9-4 in 2024.
BYU’s third visit to the state of Ohio
For only the third time in program history, BYU football will play in Ohio when it faces Cincinnati on November 22.
A BYU team’s first visit to Ohio was also against Cincy in 2016. BYU won that game 20-3. The other visit to The Buckeye State was in 2019, a loss to Toledo.
BYU is 3-0 all-time against Cincinnati. The most recent meeting was BYU’s first-ever Big 12 Conference game in 2023 in Provo.
Searching for first-ever win over Iowa State
BYU is 0-5 all-time against the Iowa State Cyclones. The most recent meeting was when Iowa State crushed BYU 45-13 two years ago.
BYU’s last trip to Ames was 51 years ago, in 1974. The coaches in that game were LaVell Edwards for BYU and Iowa State’s Earle Bruce, who later went on to win four Big Ten Championships as a head coach at Ohio State.
Like BYU, Iowa State finished the 2024 season with 11 wins. The Cyclones reached the Big 12 Championship Game before falling to Arizona State.
