The meeting between BYU and Colorado will mark the Cougars’ first trip to Boulder since 1981. It will also be the first regular-season meeting between the programs since that same contest 44 years ago.
BYU won that 1981 meeting in Boulder, 41-20. A pair of BYU legends played quarterback in that game, with Jim McMahon getting the start and Steve Young stepping in when McMahon got banged up.
BYU’s last two meetings against Colorado have come in bowl games.
During the Alamo Bowl festivities in December, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake and Colorado coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders expressed respect and admiration for one another.
“I have a great relationship with Coach Prime. I have a lot of respect for what he’s done with his team,” BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake said in December.
“They played a heck of a football game. If I’m going to get my butt kicked, I’d rather get my butt kicked by that coach,” Colorado’s Coach Prime said about BYU and Kalani Sitake after the Alamo Bowl. “I love him to life, man. He’s a good man.”
