Utah Jazz Beat Nets To Start First Win Streak Of Season

BROOKLYN – The Utah Jazz caught fire in the second half to come out on top over the Brooklyn Nets in Barclays Center on Saturday.

Lauri Markkanen led the way with 21 points, scoring 14 in the fourth quarter. Collin Sexton was debatable the Jazz’s MVP though. With 18 points, five assists, and four steals, Sexton stepped up and was the spark for multiple runs.

The 105-94 win over the Nets gave Utah their first win streak of the season after beating the Pistons on Thursday night.

The Jazz and Nets will face off in Delta Center next month of Sunday, January 12.

First Quarter

The Jazz didn’t have nearly the hot start that they did in Detroit earlier this week. In the opening quarter, Utah shot 38 percent from the floor and 10 percent from deep.

Regardless, it was still enough to stay competitive against a struggling Nets team.

Despite Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton coming out of the gates slowly, all five starters got on the board in the opening quarter.

Svi Mykhailiuk led the way with five points. Three other Jazz players had four.

Utah trailed Brooklyn after one, 24-19.

Second Quarter

The second quarter was more of the same for the Jazz.

The shooting struggles were still there and Brooklyn took advantage. Led by Jalen Wilson and Tyrese Martin, the Nets slowly built their lead up.

That continued until the Jazz’s offense found its legs just before the half.

Utah closed out the half on a 17-6 run. Mykhailiuk did most of the damage and increased his point total to 15 going into the break.

Sexton was the next-highest scoring Jazzman with 10.

Utah drastically picked up its shooting in the second quarter, jumping to above 40 percent from the floor and 30 percent from three.

The late run had Utah leading 50-45 through two quarters.

Third Quarter

The Jazz ran some very interesting lineups throughout this game but specifically in the third.

With six minutes left in the quarter, Utah had three guards and two bigs on the floor. Isaiah Collier, Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, Micah Potter, and John Collins.

Ironically, it was this lineup that broke the game open for the Jazz. A three from Potter and a string of makes from Sexton put Utah up by double digits.

It got to the point where the highlights started speaking for themselves. It was clear who had all of the momentum.

From the end of the third to the beginning of the fourth, Utah went on a 20-6 run.

Going into the final 12, the Jazz led 75-63.

Fourth Quarter

With just 11 minutes left in the game, Utah led by 17 points.

There have been multiple games this year where a big Jazz lead was cut down or even flipped. That wasn’t the case in Brooklyn on Saturday.

Markkanen took off in the final quarter, scoring 14 of his 21 points on 50 percent from the floor.

Paired with solid contributions from Kessler and Brice Sensabaugh, Utah matched Brooklyn’s energy and only lost the fourth by one point.

The Jazz handed the Nets their seventh loss in nine games as well as their third straight loss in Barclays Center, 105-94.
