SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah Jazz assistant coach Keyon Dooling received a multi-year prison sentence for his role in a scheme to defraud the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan.

On Friday, February 17, Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced sentences for Dooling and fellow former NBA player Alan Anderson.

Dooling was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role. Anderson received a 24-month sentence.

“These former players recruited others to take part in this widespread fraud scheme and went to great lengths to keep the scheme running smoothly, facilitating hundreds of thousands of dollars of fraudulent claims,” Williams said in a statement. “This Office will continue to aggressively prosecute those engaged in health care fraud schemes, no matter what their profession. Those considering submitting false claims to health care plans should recognize that they will be subject to serious penalties.”

According to Williams’ sentencing, the former Jazz assistant “participated in the scheme from at least in or about 2017 through in or about 2019. DOOLING traded on his reputation among current and former NBA players to refer other former NBA players to co-defendant KHAZIRAN and WAHAB. DOOLING also recruited and attempted to recruit additional Plan-participants and medical professionals into the fraud scheme. DOOLING himself submitted fraudulent invoices to the Plan, relating to services purportedly performed by co-defendants KHAZIRAN and WAHAB. DOOLING received approximately $363,000 in fraudulent reimbursements, and he is responsible for facilitating the fraudulent claims filed by other defendants, who received approximately $194,295 in fraudulent proceeds from the plan.”

Dooling was placed on leave by the Jazz in April 2022. He was placed on leave after the former NBA player was charged by federal officials.

At the time, the Jazz issued the following:

“Keyon made us aware of the situation this morning. It is a case concerning his time at the National Basketball Players Association, prior to him joining our organization. He has been put on paid administrative leave. Due to the ongoing legal process, we will refrain from further comment.” – Utah Jazz

Dooling spent 13 seasons in the NBA after being drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 10th overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft. He started his career with the Los Angeles Clippers from 2000-04. Then he went to the Miami Heat for two seasons before joining the Orlando Magic from 2005-08. Dooling went to New Jersey to play for the Nets from 2008-10.

In 2010, Dooling was with the Milwaukee Bucks until 2011. His last full season was 2011-12 with the Boston Celtics. Dooling ended his career with the Memphis Grizzlies and Reno Bighorns of the NBA G-League in 2013.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native was hired by former Jazz head coach Quin Snyder as a player development coach for Utah on September 25, 2020.

Dooling spent time playing international basketball in 1998, winning Gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship with Puerto Plata. Then in 1999, he took Silver at the FIBA U19 World Championship with Lisbon.
