Former USU Star Sam Merrill Signs Multi-Year Contract With Cavaliers

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah State basketball star Sam Merrill signed a multi-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Merrill signed a 10-day contract with the Cavs on March 3. Prior to joining the team, Merrill played in 35 games with the Charge, Cleveland’s G-League affiliate.

The team did not release details of the new multi-year contract.

With the Charge, he averaged 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 33.7 minutes.  He scored a season-high 32 points, including a Charge franchise record 10-14 (.714) shooting from the three-point line on February 22 against the Greensboro Swarm.

Merrill’s time in the NBA has been split between the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Bucks.

During his rookie year with the Milwaukee Bucks, Merrill won an NBA Championship ring.

The former Utah State Aggie was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans as the 60th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Merrill was the Mountain West Conference Player Of The Year in 2019.

About Sam Merrill

A three-year varsity letter winner and 2014 Utah 4A MVP, Merrill spent his prep career with the Bountiful Braves. He led Bountiful to the 4A state title as a senior, averaging 15.8 points, 7.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.

Merrill joined Utah State in 2016 and began rewriting the Aggie record books.

One of the best to ever play at USU, Merrill’s name is all over the Aggie basketball record books. He is first in career free throw percentage (.891), and second in career points (2,197), career assists (477), career three-point field goals (319), three-point field goals attempted (759), 10-point games (108), and minutes played (4,360).

His Aggie career ended with Merrill hitting a last-second three-pointer against San Diego State in the 2020 Mountain West conference championship game to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately for Merrill and the Aggies, Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 season before another game was played.
