The U.S. finished second in a Group B that included Sweden, Slovakia, and Germany. Team USA began the tournament by downing Slovakia 6-3 on August 11.
Two days later, the Americans suffered a 5-3 setback against Sweden. They responded by burying the Germans in an 8-1 rout, earning a spot in the semifinals against Canada.
