SALT LAKE CITY – New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said second-year quarterback Zach Wilson is zoned in as the organization held its mandatory minicamp.

The Jets will wrap up their spring offseason minicamp on Wednesday, June 15.

A day before the final practice of the mandatory session, LaFleur praised his quarterback out of BYU.

“His focus has been in the right spot,” LaFleur told the media.

After having played in 13 of New York’s 17 games in 2021, Wilson’s rookie campaign, the second-year coordinator is pleased with the progress of the signal-caller and the Jets’ offense.

“It’s Year 1 for an offense, Year 1 for a staff, Year 1 for a rookie quarterback,” LaFleur added. “Not only did he have to learn our terminology and our system, he had to learn just the difference between the college game and the NFL game. “You’re trying to simulate that in May and June and the speed is one thing, but you come back in August and now the speed ramps up even a little bit more.”

As Wilson enters his second year in the NFL, the former BYU star will be more prepared for game time and should have better weapons to distribute the ball to. During free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft, the Jets utilized their draft picks in an effort to surround Wilson with better talent than the supporting cast he had as a rookie.

“Just the fact that he knows what to expect come August, come September, you don’t have to talk about that as much,” LaFleur said. “You just try to dial in on what matters right now and that’s making sure we are mastering our offense and our job as a quarterback. That’s where I say his mindset and focus has been very cool to watch, very different from last year.”

About Zach Wilson

Before his time in the NFL, the Corner Canyon High School product had a standout career at BYU. Wilson helped the Cougars to an 11-1 record during his final season in Provo.

Wilson recently completed his first season in the NFL.

The quarterback struggled to start the 2021 campaign and suffered a knee injury that caused him to miss a month midway through the season.

After bouncing back from the injury, Wilson saw his play improve down the final stretch of New York’s schedule.

Wilson finished the season passing for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He added 185 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
