Your Guide To The 20th Anniversary Celebration Of The 2002 SLC Olympics

SALT LAKE CITY – It’s been nearly 20 years since the Winter Olympic Games came to Salt Lake City and the state is putting together lots of events to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

Events are planned for the entire month of February by the Utah Olympic Legacy that fans can attend and participate, along with social media giveaways.

Here is your guide for everything going on around the Beehive state during the month of February to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Social Media Giveaways

While you visit the anniversary events around the state, be sure to follow and tag the Utah Olympics’ social media pages, which will enter you in to win some great prizes. The grand prize at the end of the month will get to experience private bobsled, speed skating and biathlon lessons or a private Flying Aces summer show.

Events In Salt Lake City/Kearns

The Gallivan Center, Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Utah Olympic Oval will have some fun events for the entire family.

  • Tuesday, February 8: $5 skate night at the Gallivan Center
  • Tuesday, February 8: Cauldron Lighting Ceremony at Rice-Eccles Stadium from 5:45 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.)
  • Friday, February 18: Public skate and ice show at the Olympic Oval: Discounted public skate ($2) and rental and a figure skating show.
    • Figure skating show is at 6 p.m. with the discounted public skate starting at 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 14: Athlete Homecoming Celebration at Governor’s Utah State of Sport Awards.

Park City

The Utah Olympic Park, downtown Park City and many more places around the area have exciting events planned.

  • Monday, February 7: NBC Olympic Rings tour at Utah Olympic Park from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 10: Watch party at the Utah Olympic Park hosted by Park City Ski & Snowboard from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. It’s free to the public with VIP tickets available through Park City Ski and Snowboard. Live Slalom, halfpipe, food trucks and hot drinks will also be available. Register for the event, here.
  • February 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 19, 20/March 12 and 13: The Winter Sports Festival at City Park. They will provide “learn to” programming for Figure Skating, Hockey, Sled Hockey, Speedskating, Curling and Wheelchair Curling. The festival will have a warming hut with free hot beverages, snacks and surprise athlete appearances. All equipment and rentals needed to participate will be free and provided on-site. The “learn to” clinics will begin February 11. Free skate is February 5 and 6. Registration will open on February 2.
  • Saturday, February 12: 20th Anniversary Celebration of the 2002 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in downtown Park City, Bob Wells Plaza from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The video board will be airing the Games and 2002 highlights. Food and drinks (TBD), local merchants, USOPC/UOLF aligned partner activation, pin trading, athletes, Winter Olympic demos/experiences, National Ability Center demos, climbing wall, caricature drawings, DJ/music and KPCW.
  • February 4-20: Team USA Store located at Kimball Terrance on Main Street will be open daily to the public from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The store will sell Team USA apparel from Nike and Ralph Lauren. Also, an exclusive line of Salt Lake City Anniversary products. Times are subject to change.
  • Friday, April 1: Youth Sports Alliance Olympic & Paralympic Homecoming Parade. Check out the Park City homegrown and hometown athletes in a parade on Main Street in Park City.
    • 5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.: Parade down Main Street and speeches
    • 5:45 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Autograph session at Town Lift Plaza
    • 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Concert at the bottom of Main Street

Heber Valley – Soldier Hollow Nordic Center

For all the ski fans out there, Heber Valley has you covered.

  • Friday, February 4: Free Nordic Ski Day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, February 15: “Tuesday Night Lights,” along with XC Race Series, offering a fun, low-key opportunity to bring the local Nordic community together.
  • Tuesday, February 22: IBU Youth and Junior World Championships Biathlon Opening Ceremony and races. Watch the future Olympians and world-class junior athletes compete at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center.

Ogden

Davis County will be holding sessions for “learn to curl” at the Weber County Sports Complex on Wednesday, February 2 and March 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost is $20.02 per day. Orem/Provo

Live in Utah county? No problem.

  • February 14-26 from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at University Place: Display of flags, memorabilia and photos from the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
  • Saturday, February 12 from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Peaks Ice Arena: Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympics with an extended public skate. Watch pas Olympic highlights and Disney’s “Miracle” while on the ice. There will be Olympic memorabilia, photo opportunities, raffles and goodie bags (while supplies last). Regular rates apply for public skate admission and skate rental.
  • Saturday, February 19 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at University Place: Meet 2002 Gold Medalist Derek Parra.
