SALT LAKE CITY – New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill has reportedly signed one of the NFL’s most unique contract extensions.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hill signed a four-year extension with the Saints that “could be worth anywhere between $40 million and $95 million, depending on the position he plays.”

This contract extension gives Hill $22.5 million guaranteed. That money comes regardless of the position he plays.

The former BYU star entered the season in a starting QB battle with Jameis Winston to replace Drew Brees. Hill ultimately finished behind Winston. The fifth-year NFL veteran hasn’t started a game at quarterback this season.

This contract extension comes at an interesting time for Hill and the Saints. New Orleans is in the middle of a three-game losing streak that has featured Trevor Siemian as Sean Payton’s QB1.

Siemian stepped in for an injured Winston against Tampa Bay on Halloween. The former Northwestern product led the Saints to a victory in that game against Tom Brady’s Bucs. From there, Saints coach Sean Payton has given Siemian the title of starting QB despite Hill being available the past two weeks after returning from a head injury that sidelined him for a month.

Hill has continued in his “F Position” role that helped him make a name for himself in the NFL as a “Swiss Army Knife” for the Saints. Since returning from injury, he’s tossed and completed all four of his passes for 44 yards. While also rushing for 27 yards on four carries and hauling in one catch for 15 yards.

If Hill continues playing in the do-it-all role, his new contract extension will pay him a base salary of $40 million. That jumps up by $55 million if, according to Schefter, “he does become the Saint’s starting QB for the next four seasons.”

Back in April 2020, Hill signed his first contract extension with the Saints. That extension netted him a salary of $10.5 million this season. For being a backup QB, Hill is the 17th highest-paid QB in the NFL this year.

Taysom Hill and the Saints are in action this Thursday night on KSL 5 TV against the Buffalo Bills at 6:20 p.m. (MT).
