ST. GEORGE, Utah – Former BYU basketball big man Kolby Lee is staying in the state of Utah to continue his college hoops career. Lee announced that he is exiting the Transfer Portal and is committed to playing for the Dixie State Trailblazers.

A 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, Lee started in 43 games the past two seasons at BYU. Lee started in 28 games during the 2019-20 season and averaged 7.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for a BYU team that finished with a 24-8 record.

This past year, Lee started in 15 games before seeing his minutes and playing time evaporate in February and March. Lee averaged 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds during his junior with the Cougars.

Kolby Lee headed to Dixie State

Lee, who was graded as a four-star recruit by ESPN coming out of Meridian, Idaho, is the first four-star prospect in Dixie State Basketball history. He was a three-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

During his career with BYU, Lee primarily played the center position where he had a knack for “quickie shots.” Lee shot 62.5% from the field in his sophomore season. That number dipped to 51.9% as a junior.

Dixie State completed its first season as a Division I program in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The TrailBlazers remain in a transition period after a move up from Division II to Division I. Due to the transition, Dixie State cannot participate in an NCAA Division I postseason until the 2024-25 season.

Lee will be eligible immediately to play for the TrailBlazers due to the NCAA’s one-time transfer waiver that passed earlier this month. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Lee is married to BYU women’s basketball forward Kayla Belles-Lee. The two hoopers tied the knot last August. Belles-Lee is expected to be in the rotation for a BYU women’s team that could be a preseason Top 25 squad next year.
