SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The LA Kings are in last place in the NHL. The team is evaluating their roster and that means Utah native Trevor Lewis may not be a King for much longer.

The Kings are 10-5 and management knows – something has to change.

They’ve already replaced their coach. Now, they are looking at the roster at payers who aren’t producing to the level they need to be. Big names like All-Star goalie Jonathan Quick, Illya Kovalchuck and Tyler Toffoli were the first to be thrown around.

However, in order to get a team to bite on an expensive player that isn’t putting up numbers, there has to be something more than just a straight player-for-player exchange. The trading team needs to sweeten the deal.

Sometimes the deal is sweetened with a character guy, a role player, someone who is known for doing the blue-collar work in the playoffs, and that’s how Lewis’ name keeps coming up.

He may only put up about 10 points a year, but Lewis has been the “unsung hero” for the Kings for the past 10 years (seriously, they have a vote amongst the players and Trevor wins the award every year).

Lewis has two Stanley Cups, that kind of respect and leadership is exactly what teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs need in order to get to the next stage of the playoffs.

Dustin Penner, a veteran left-wing from Canada, turned what should have been a three-year career into an eight-year career with Lewis type qualities, minus Lewis’ penalty-killing skills.

The Leafs are rumored to be looking at Kyle Clifford, so that increases the chances of a multiple-player deal.

The Chicago Blackhawks, New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings are also rumored to be in the mix with a variety of players.

However, the last time the Kings were in last place and shopping Lewis, they ended up winning the Stanley Cup.
