SALT LAKE CITY—One of Utah Hockey Club’s first moves after moving to the Beehive State was trading for Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. The move continued to pay off after Sergachev used his skate to stop a sure goal against Anaheim.

Utah HC (28-25-11, 67 points) hosted the Anaheim Ducks (28-29-7, 63 points) at Delta Center on Wednesday, March 12. Utah opens the night fifth in the Western Conference Wild Card chase, three points behind the Calgary Flames for the final playoff spot in the West. Vancouver and St. Louis are between Utah and a playoff spot with 69 points.

Utah is 16-12-4 at home during its inaugural season, while Anaheim is 13-14-5 on the road. The Ducks are 2-0 against Utah this season, including a 5-4 shootout loss at Delta Center on December 22.

Holding onto a 1-0 lead early in the middle 20, Utah goaltender Karel Vejmelka got out of position, leaving an open net. Anaheim’s Ryan Strome tried flicking the puck over the goal line, but Sergachev kicked the puck away to keep his team in front.

Sergachev has 11 goals and 31 assists in 60 games this season.

Utah is controlling the action offensively. Through 33 minutes on the ice, they have outshot the Ducks 23-14.
