SALT LAKE CITY – After trading for defenseman Olli Maatta earlier this season, the Utah Hockey Club announced on Monday that they officially signed the 30-year-old veteran to a three-year contract extension through the end of the 2027-28 season.

Utah Hockey Club extends Olli Maatta

“We’re thrilled to have Olli signed for the next three years,” Bill Armstrong, general manager of Utah Hockey Club said. “Olli is a smart defenseman and a true professional on and off the ice.”

“He has brought stability to our blue line, has a tremendous work ethic, and is an excellent role model for our younger players. We look forward to having him as an important part of our core moving forward.”

Following his acquisition from the Detroit Red Wings for a third-round draft pick, Maatta has appeared in 51 games with the Utah Hockey Club.

“Right away when I got here, you could feel it. It’s a first-class organization. It doesn’t feel like it’s a first-year thing at all,” Olli Maatta said.

“What’s most impressive for me is how much guys want it in that l0cker room…how willing they are to check their egos at the door. Everybody is doing that. I think it just shows how much guy’s care. It’s pretty incredible to be a part of that.”

Since the acquisition, the former back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion (2016 & 2017) has registered two goals and 12 assists for the club.

He also ranks third on Utah’s roster in ice time per game (20:41), blocked shots (101) and is tied for a team-high plus/minus (+7).

“Name any young player in our organization and I would like that guy to follow Olli Maatta. The way he prepares, the way he trains, the way he approaches the game, the way he focused, the way he works at his game…you won’t find a better pro than that,” Head coach Andre Tourigny said.

According to National Insider Elliotte Friedman, the contract is three-year, $10.5M extension with a cap hit of $3.5M per season.

The deal will expire at the end of the 2027-28 season when Maatta will be 33 years old.
