SALT LAKE CITY – The gold is coming home following a mammoth victory for Team USA at the World Championships as they defeated Switzerland 1-0 in OT to win the tournament for the first time since 1933. In addition to having the youngest roster at the Worlds, four Utah Mammoth players won gold for the United States.

Logan Cooley assists Tage Thompson for Team USA’s golden goal at the World Championships

After three full periods of hockey and 63 shots between the two teams, nothing could separate the United States and Switzerland in regulation.

However, just two minutes into the overtime, the Americans found themselves on a quick rush as Tage Thompson sniped the impenetrable Leonardo Genoni up high to light the golden lamp.

Notably, Utah’s Logan Cooley was credited with the assist.

“What an absolutely amazing feeling,” Head coach Ryan Warsofsky told USA Hockey. “Everyone in our group contributed to winning the gold medal. We beat an excellent team in Switzerland tonight and full credit to them for the tournament they had.”

“On behalf of our team, I’d also like to thank all the people who helped put on the world championship. We’ll remember this for a long, long time.”

Team USA honors late Johnny Gaudreau during cup ceremony

A special and heartfelt moment took place during the cup ceremony at the World Championships as Team USA’s leadership group honored the late Johnny Gaudreau by placing his sweater over the cup as they accepted the trophy.

Before his tragic passing last August, Gaudreau was Team USA’s all-time leading scorer at the World Championships.

In addition to the touching tribute for No. 13 during the ceremony, the U.S. also wore helmet decals with Gaudreau’s name and both brother’s numbers during the entirety of the tournament.
