SALT LAKE CITY – Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” was on repeat at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden as Team USA defeated the host nation 6-2 in the semifinal round. Following the American’s commanding victory over the Swedes, four Utah Mammoth players will now play for gold at the Men’s World Championships on Sunday.

Team USA to play for Gold at Men’s World Championships after defeating Sweden

Nearly a century after the U.S. secured gold at the Men’s World Championships in 1933, the Stars and Stripes will have a chance to bring home the golden hardware in 2025.

Following a competitive matchup with Finland in the quarterfinals, the U.S. dominated the Swedes right from puck drop as they established a 4-0 lead through two periods of play.

Despite some pushback from Sweden in the third, the U.S. added two more insurance goals to punch their ticket to the gold medal game on Sunday.

“I liked our start. We were simple. We knew how we had to start the game and how we had to play. So, I thought everyone chipped in and made an impact on the game today. We stuck to our game plan,” Clayton Keller told IIHF.

Through nine games at the World Championships, Logan Cooley has the second-most points for Team USA with 11 (4G, 7A) while Keller is tied for third with 10 (3G, 7A).

Notably, Michael Kesselring also has four points (third amongst American defensemen) while Josh Doan has one.

Following the American’s victory, they’ll await the winner of Switzerland and Denmark in the gold medal matchup on Sunday.

“It’s a good feeling. There’s one more game to win. We’re going to focus on tomorrow,” Keller said.
