SALT LAKE CITY—When Devon Dampier transferred to Kyle Whittingham’s Utah football program, he embraced a new opportunity.
This new opportunity still afforded some familiarity as he followed offensive coordinator Jason Beck from New Mexico to Salt Lake City.
That’s made the transition significantly smoother for all involved and enabled Dampier to step into a more prominent leadership role.

Devon Dampier’s been huge in Utah football’s progress on offense
Dampier has made his presence felt where it matters most: in the locker room and the huddle. Wide receivers coach Micah Simon has seen the ripple effects of Dampier’s leadership firsthand.
“Devon is like that extra coach on the field—or even on the sideline,” Simon said. “He’s right there commanding the offense and leading them the right way. When you have a guy like that, it’s huge. With a quarterback like Devon, you bring the entire playbook because he can handle it all. And when your quarterback is handling everything, it makes everyone else’s job easier.”
Utah’s coaching staff has praised Dampier’s work ethic, football IQ, and leadership qualities. Coach Beck has acknowledged the benefit of Dampier’s familiarity with the offense in terms of the installation. However, he noted that he still expects individual improvement from Dampier as he enters his second year in the offense.

“I do expect improvement from Devon,” Beck said. “He’s a very conscientious kid, and he works hard. When you ask him to focus on specific things, he has a great ability to process that feedback and make real progress.”
“Protecting the ball, that’s something big I’ve been working on this spring,” Dampier said of where he feels he’s improved. “But, you’re never at your full potential. There’s always room to get better, so I’m just always going over film, seeing that I can do better every day.”
After consecutive campaigns that unraveled due to injuries and frustrating letdowns, Utah needed a spark to turn things around and Dampier has seemingly provided that. His leadership has been instrumental in the program’s improved vibes.
“It feels like I mean something here,” he said. “I’m going out in public. I feel the love here. Utah expects a lot of their football team, and I’m going to make sure I deliver on that.”
Utah’s offensive line believes in Dampier
That kind of command brings confidence to every position group, especially the offensive line—a unit that thrives on communication, trust, and consistency.
“I think that’s been the easiest part of coming here, they kind of handle a lot of stuff up front,” Dampier said of his offensive line. “They’re all on the same page, and when you’ve got all five guys locked in, it makes my job super easy.”

The trust between the quarterback and the offensive line is mutual. Offensive line coach Jim Harding, a longtime anchor of Utah’s staff, believes Dampier has already made a significant impact on his group.
“Devon came in and earned the trust of the offensive line,” Harding said. “He’s a strong leader and a dynamic playmaker; that combination goes a long way in this system.”
Starting right tackle Spencer Fano added, “Every day, he just makes better and better decisions. He’s built a lot of trust with the O-line and receivers. He’s in control, and he’s fun to play with—it’s just so much fun being out there with him.”
The stress defenses feel with Dampier on the field
A program built on physicality, discipline, and elite defense needed a signal-caller who could complement that foundation with leadership and strong play. It’s provided good competition in practice and a healthy back-and-forth.
“Coming here, I knew the defense was going to be great,” Dampier said. “Getting that work against a great defense, me personally, I feel I’m getting better by the day. And the new guys are adjusting to the new offense—we’re on the right track and moving fast.”

Dampier’s dual-threat ability brings another layer of complexity to opposing defenses. His instincts, combined with elite athleticism, make him a constant threat—even when a play appears dead.
“As a defensive front seven, you have to be really conscientious of where he is at all times because he can hurt you even when you’ve called a perfect defense,” said linebackers coach Colton Swan. “You can have amazing coverage for three or four seconds, and then all of a sudden, you go from thinking you’ve got a sack to him scrambling out and extending the play. He forces you to stay sharp on every snap.”
In a program known for grinding out wins with defense and toughness, Dampier is redefining the offense at Utah. His emergence hasn’t just energized the offense—it’s changed what’s possible for the entire team.
