Utah State Roughs Up Rams In Blowout Win

LOGAN, Utah – The three ball was falling in spades for Utah State, as the Aggies built a big early lead before holding on for the 93-85 win. USU knocked down 12-of-23 shots from deep while shooting 59.3 percent overall.
The Aggies (22-3, 12-2) welcomed Colorado State (15-9, 9-4) to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Tuesday, February 11.

Mason Falslev went 4-of-6 from three, finishing with 22 points to lead five Aggie double-digit scorers. Aubin Gateretse was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, adding 16 points, six boards, and four assists. Ian Martinez scored 12 second-half points to finish with 14, while Dexter Akanno added 11 and Deyton Albury finished with 10.
Utah State scored 21 points off 11 Rams turnovers and outscored CSU 32-20 in the paint.
Nique Clifford led all scorers with 24 points.
First Half
Utah State grabbed the opening tap, and Ian Martinez electrified the Spectrum crowd with a three from the top of the key. The Aggies followed the triple, forcing a turnover and a Mason Falslev layup to take a quick 5-0 lead.
Moments later, Deyton Albury got a friendly roll from deep to give his team an eight-nothing run to open the game. ‘
USU made their first five shots, including three from beyond the arc, to open a 14-4 lead. Dexter Akanno’s second triple gave the Aggies a 17-7 advantage at the first media timeout.
The three ball kept falling, with Falslev hitting back-to-back threes. A 6-for-6 start from three helped USU to a 23-7 lead with 14:36 left. Falsev’s corner three extended a 9-0 run for the Aggies.

While the Aggies came sprinting out of the blocks, Colorado State struggled to 3-of-6 from the field in the opening eight minutes.
The Rams committed five giveaways in the opening minutes, allowing the Aggies to attempt eight more shots in the opening stretch. USU converted the turnovers into 14 points.

Utah State’s run grew to 20-5 across more than six minutes.
USU then went cold, missing six of seven shots before Isaac Johnson’s floater dropped with just over four minutes left. The Aggies’ defense didn’t let up during the cold spell, maintaining a 16-point lead.
After CSU cut the deficit to 12, Falslev scored five straight points, giving the Aggies a 45-28 advantage with a minute left. Falsev led all scorers in the half with 16 points on 4-of-5 from deep.

Utah State made 16-of-28 shots (57.1 percent) and went 8-of-13 from deep. Colorado State committed nine turnovers, leading to 19 Aggie points. USU committed only three turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Ian Martinez played just 2:30 after picking up two early fouls.
Second Half
Falslev scored four quick points out of the break to reach 20 on the night. USU pushed the lead back to 20 when Martinez knocked down his second three off an assist from Falslev.

Later in the half, back-to-back Aubin Gateretse dunks gave USU a 67-45 lead. Gateretse made his first seven shots from the field as the Rams defense couldn’t find a way to keep him off the rim.

The Rams used a 10-3 run, cutting the lead to 15 with nine minutes left.
USU began running the clock with a big lead, causing its scoring to slow down. The Aggies led 77-64 with 5:13 left.
CSU cut the deficit to single-digits in the final minute, getting within eight after two Nique Clifford free throws.
Utah State held on for the 93-85 win.

Utah State will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday, February 16, for a rematch with the MW-leading Lobos (20-4, 12-1). Tip-off is at 2 p.m. MT. On February 1, New Mexico handed USU its second home loss, an 81-63 setback.
