PROVO, Utah – Charges against BYU linebacker/defensive back Chaz Ah You, including suspicion of DUI, have been dropped because, according to documents, the court has declined to prosecute.

Ah You was arrested on February 9 in Eagle Mountain and booked into Utah County Jail. The arresting officer performed an inventory search of the vehicle and reported that he found an open container of alcohol, an empty container of alcohol, and a “THC vape pen” in the center console.

A field sobriety test was later performed at Utah County Jail “due to weather”, according to the arresting officer’s statement.

After the field sobriety test, the officer wrote, “the individual struggled on counting to 30 the first time so I offered him the test a second time with the same results. Forensic results showed a presumptive measurable amount in his system.”

“Our office is declining to prosecute this case,” read an email from a Utah County Attorney’s office legal assistant, “Can you cancel the pre-trial and make the case declined?”

According to official documentation, the office declined to prosecute five charges which included: drinking in or about a vehicle, DUI (alcohol/drugs or combo), improper lane change, reckless driving and speeding.

Ah You is currently enrolled at BYU and has been around the team throughout his legal situation. Head Coach Kalani Sitake said on the first day of spring football that Ah You would not be participating in spring practices. Prior to spring ball, Ah You had off-season shoulder surgery where he was wearing a sling. Since the sling has been removed as he continues his recovery from the injury.

Ah You’s teammates such as senior leader Isaiah Kaufusi made it a point to keep the budding star close to the team while he was going through the legal process.

“He’s still a teammate and a brother and we had a team meeting, just called Chaz and I wanted to make sure he was there. We’ve had several conversations on the phone just letting him know we love him. We make mistakes and guys have struggled. I just wanted him to know that we love him,” said Kaufusi.

On the football field

When healthy and cleared to play, Chaz Ah You is an impact player for BYU in their defense. Ah You played linebacker last season in his first year back after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Prior to serving a mission, he played safety and was a four-star recruit in high school at that spot.

Ah You could play in the defensive secondary this season if BYU changes their base alignment to utilize more defensive backs. Last season, Ah You had 31 tackles, one sack, and one interception in 11 games played.
