SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone and his family helped others in Louisiana by passing out “thousands of pounds of food to families.”

Malone and his family took part in the food donation in Farmerville, Lousiana on Saturday, May 2.

“Knowing I could do my part, I’m not out here to try and do it elaborate,” Malone told KTVE. “I’m out here to say, ‘You know what? Whatever you can do. We all can do a little. I’m not asking you to do a lot. We’ve got to do a little.'”

KTVE’s Chris Demirdjian posted a video clip on Twitter of the Jazz legend discussing the relief effort. Malone’s wife, Kay, replied to the tweet saying, “Blessed to give.”

Malone and his family’s help comes during a time of need as many people, including those in near the Jazz legend’s hometown, have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Utah Jazz Legend Karl Malone

Malone is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play in the NBA. He spent the majority of his hall of fame career as a member of the Utah Jazz.

The forward played for the Jazz organization from 1985-2003.

During his career, Malone won the league’s MVP award twice and was a 14-time NBA All-Star.

Malone finished his career as and still remains the NBA’s second all-time leading scorer behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Among other honors, Malone’s jersey No. 32 was retired by the Jazz organization and hangs in the rafters at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Outside the arena, a statue of Malone sits feet away from a statue of fellow Jazz great, John Stockton.

“Drive and Assist” Food Drive

Recently, theĀ Larry H. Miller group of companies, including the Utah Jazz, announced the “Drive and Assist” campaign. The relief effort includes aĀ massive good drive to support the Utah Food Bank amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The drive will be held at Larry H. Miller car dealerships, movie theatres, and sports facilities to make the public donations more easily accessible, donations can be made between 2-6 each day, except Sunday, May 3, at drive-thru locations.

The drive began onĀ April 30 and run through May 6, 2020.

The ā€œDrive and Assistā€ campaign hopes to address growing food insecurity conditions as the financial impact of the virus threatens members of the state of Utah.

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDCĀ has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and waterĀ for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDCĀ recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.
