Jazz Sneak Past Pistons For Second Straight Road Win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz were able to get past the Detroit Pistons for their second straight road win, 96-86 on Sunday afternoon in the Motor City.

Donovan Mitchell led the way with 28 points, including 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Mike Conley added 22 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The duo combined for 50 points on 17-for-31 from the floor and 6-of-12 from deep. Jordan Clarkson chipped in 18 points off the bench. Rudy Gobert struggled offensively but made up for it on the boards and defensively, posting 4 points, 20 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Jerami Grant led the Pistons with 28 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Saddiq Bey contributed 12 points off the bench, while Blake Griffin had 10 points, 6 boards and 5 assists.

With the win over the Pistons, head coach Quin Snyder tied Frank Layden for the second most regular season wins in franchise history with 277.

Jazz Start Game Hot Against Pistons

Utah started the game with multiple big runs including a 9-0 lead early. They had a 34-19 lead over the Pistons at the end of the opening period. Donovan Mitchell scored 13 points in first 12 minutes of play. The Jazz knocked down 6 three-pointers.

It was a closer game in the second quarter but the Jazz still edged out Detroit 23-21. Mike Conley was great in the quarter with 8 points. Utah’s biggest lead in the first half was 20 points and they took a 57-40 lead heading into the locker room.

Mitchell and Conley combined for 28 points and both shot 6-for-10 from the field. Donovan made 3 triples in the first 24 minutes of action. Jerami Grant kept the Pistons close with 15 first half points.

Pistons Come Back In Second Half Against Jazz

The Pistons came out of the halftime break firing while the Jazz went cold offensively. Detroit outscored Utah 28-17 in the third quarter. Grant scored 11 points in the period and Saddiq Bey added 7 points. Out of the 17 points scored for the Jazz, Mitchell had 6, Conley had 4, Ingles added 3 points, while Bogdanovic and Clarkson each scored a bucket.

In the fourth quarter, Utah kept Detroit within arms length. Detroit got the deficit to within 5 points with just under two minutes left but the Jazz were able to hold on. They outscored the Pistons 22-18 in the fourth quarter.

The Jazz improved to 6-4 on the season. They will make their sixth stop on their seven game road trip to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers. The game will take place on Tuesday, January 12 at 5:30 p.m. MST on AT&T SportsNet.
