SALT LAKE CITY – One of the last remaining bastions of the Donovan Mitchell era is gone as the All-Star guard’s mural at the Gateway Mall has been painted over.

The painting, which was first commissioned in 2019, sat on the bridge that crossed over 100 South on Rio Grande Street at the center of the popular mall in downtown Salt Lake City.

The “Donovan Mitchell Bridge” is a stone’s throw from Vivint Arena and was easily visible to thousands of Jazz fans each time they poured into home games.

On Thursday, a painting crew set up scaffolding and removed the Gateway mural, two months after Mitchell was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Created by artists Chuck Landvatter and Jared Smith, the bridge was one of several Jazz themed murals that popped up in downtown Salt Lake City during the team’s multiple runs to the playoffs.

Another mural featuring legendary faces and moments from Jazz history sits on the south wall of the Zions Bank Building on 100 South and Main Street.

A third mural sits on the west side of Valter’s Osteria on 173 West Broadway, a popular stop for Italian food among traveling NBA teams.

Neither the Zions Bank mural, nor the painting on Valter’s features modern players that will require being removed.

Donovan Mitchell Excelling In Cleveland

Though the “Donovan Mitchell Bridge” painting is gone from the Gateway, the guard’s impact is still feeling felt across the NBA.

The former Jazzman is off to a record start in Cleveland averaging a career-high 31.1 points per game to go with 7.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds.

The Cavaliers are off to a strong start at 6-1, sitting in second place in the Eastern Conference.

The Jazz meanwhile have had little complaint about the return they got for Mitchell, Lauri Markkanen is already receiving early All-Star buzz while Collin Sexton has provided excitement off the bench.

Markkanen and Sexton have helped lead the Jazz to a surprise 6-3 start to open the season.
