LA Galaxy Fires Manager Just Days Before Real Salt Lake Fixture

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The LA Galaxy has relieved “Guillermo Barros Schelotto of his head coaching duties, effective immediately”, the club announced this afternoon via a statement.

The news breaks following a poor 2020 regular-season in which the Galaxy finds itself on the bottom of the Western Conference. On Wednesday evening, the Galaxy lost to the Portland Timbers 5-2 on the road. Their playoff future was all but diminished with just two games remaining on their schedule.

“Based on results, we have decided to go in a different direction,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. “The LA Galaxy is a club that is built on winning on the field and being representative of the championship mentality and pedigree that you expect in Los Angeles. As a club, we have a collective responsibility and we all must share the blame for the club’s current standing. I take responsibility for the poor results and believe that we can find the right way forward for this team and our club.”

“Additionally, assistant coach Gustavo Barros Schelotto, assistant coach Ariel Pereyra, goalkeeping coach Juan José Romero and performance coach Javier Valdecantos have been relieved of their coaching duties,” the statement reads.

The interim coach will be Dominic Kinnear, formerly an assistant under Schelotto, he will undertake his second stint as interim manager as LA Galaxy. Previously, Kinnear filled the void left by Sigi Schmid who was fired in 2018 after a five-game losing skid despite the Galaxy holding first place in the Western Conference.

From September 10 to December 28 in 2018, Kinnear managed six games winning three of them, drawing once and losing twice. His winning percentage at the LA Galaxy is 50 percent.

Schelotto, however, held an overall record of 21-26-6 during his tenure with the Galaxy. In 2020, the Galaxies record is 5-11-3 throughout the regular season.

Incoming RSL

Real Salt Lake will travel to Dignity Health Sports Park and visit the lonely Galaxy this upcoming Sunday evening with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

It will be the second last fixture on the calendar for RSL who will invite Sporting Kansas City the following Sunday to Rio Tinto Stadium to conclude their regular-season campaign.
