Johnny Russell Gives Real Salt Lake Early Lead Over D.C. United

SANDY, Utah – Once a thorn in the side of Real Salt Lake, Johnny Russell opened his RSL account, giving his new club a 1-0 first-half lead over D.C. United.
Real Salt Lake (4-10-3, 15 points) is hosting D.C. United (4-8-6, 18 points) at America First Field on Saturday, June 14.

Russell eluded the defense down the near side of the field, taking a pass from Diogo Gonçalves with wide open pastures in front of him. Russell dribbled into the box before beating Luis Barraza with a well-placed left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Real Salt Lake started slowly but has come on to outshoot D.C. 4-2, with three shots on goal in the first 26 minutes.

His 20-year Major League Soccer career with three franchises will forever be remembered, as he established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in MLS history and one of the greatest in American soccer history.

Rimando retired with two MLS Cup championships, eight MLS All-Star appearances, and three MLS Save of the Year awards. He holds MLS records in appearances (514), minutes (46,336), saves (1,705), wins (223), and clean sheets (153).
Rimando went on to play in 22 games for the USMNT. He assisted the team during the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup team.
