SALT LAKE CITY – Former Masters Champion and current Utah resident Mike Weir believes that Tiger Woods will play at Augusta National next week.

Mike Weir has seen Tiger Woods first hand for two decades and believes he will overcome his injury and play at The Masters. Woods was in a car accident on February 23, 2021 and had to undergo emergency surgery to repair compound fractures sustained in each leg in addition to a shattered ankle.

Weir has a special connection with Woods. When Weir won The Masters in 2003, Woods put the green jacket on Weir.

The Sandy, Utah resident joined DJ & PK on The Zone Sports Network on Thursday morning to preview The Masters and talk about Tiger Woods.

Mike Weir Shares Thoughts On Tiger Woods Potentially Playing In The Masters

Woods has been playing golf recently and gave it a try at Augusta in a practice round and played well.

“I’ve been saying this for months, I know him fairly well, I know him very well as a competitor,” Weir said. “I just had a gut feeling. Nothing that I’ve talked to him about or any insider information, just my gut that is saying that he’s going to play. I felt like him playing in the PNC with his son Charlie, and looking good there, even though he was taking a cart and walking Augusta is a whole different thing. But I think the progress just even watching at the Hall of Fame induction that he was inducted to and how he was moving and walking around.

Weir believes that Woods looks a lot better than he did at the father-son tournament.

“He looked so much better than the father-son (tournament) a couple months ago,” stated Weir. “He’s got a big hurdle to climb with walking that course for five or six days straight, and what that might do to his ankle and leg but just know the competitor that he is and that he wants to get back. He probably saw Phil (Mickelson) sitting back last year when he was off, watching Phil win at 50. I know the competitive fire in him was like, ‘Well, if he could do it, I certainly can.’ So I’m sure he sees that as motivation as well. So I think he’s playing. I don’t think there’s any doubt he’s out there scoping it out. But I can’t imagine that he’s not playing.”

The Masters will take place April 7-10 at Augusta National in Georgia.
