SALT LAKE CITY – The last game of the high school football season was as entertaining as it gets with Lone Peak taking the 6A state title with a 49-42 win over Corner Canyon.

The win for Lone Peak snapped Corner Canyon’s three-year state championship streak. This same Knights team snapped a state-tying 48 game winning streak with a win over the Chargers in the regular season.

Easton Comer threw four touchdown passes, finding Crew McChesney three times and Cole Christensen once. Luke Durfey added two rushing TD’s, along with one from Jaxson Willits.

For Corner Canyon, Devin Brown had four passing TD’s and one rushing score, connecting with Cody Hagen twice, and once each to Jon King and Jett Meine.

Offensive Explosion In First Half

In just 29 seconds into the game, Corner Canyon scored a touchdown on a 61-yard strike from Devin Brown to Cody Hagen. The Chargers held a 7-0 lead with 11:31 to play in the opening quarter.

It took Lone Peak just a little bit longer but Easton Comer hit Cole Christensen for a 62-yard TD to tie the game with 10:37 left in the first. The Chargers took the lead back after Brown ran in an 11-yard TD with 6:16 to play in the first quarter.

Lone Peak responded and tied the game as  Tyler Bilbro ran into the end zone from 32 yards out with 2:42 to play in the opening period. Corner Canyon approached the Lone Peak one-yard line and Drew Patterson ran it in on a wildcat play to give the Chargers a 21-14 lead with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.

It seemed like Lone Peak was going to punt on fourth and three at their own 30-yard line. But they went for it and picked up the first down. Shortly after that big play, the Knights fumbled the ball and Corner Canyon recovered for the first turnover and stop of the game.

Corner Canyon was on to punt when Lone Peak blocked it. The Knights capitalized on the great field position with a touchdown pass from Comer to Crew McChesney to tie the game at 21 with 8:51 until halftime.

Midway through the second quarter, Brown connected with Jett Meine for a 30-yard TD and the Chargers held a 28-21 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first half. On the first play from scrimmage for Lone Peak, Comer hit McChesney for an 80-yard score to tie the game with 6:05 to play in the second.

Lone Peak took their first lead of the game when Luke Durfey ran in a two-yard touchdown and it is 35-28 with under two minutes until halftime. The Chargers made a big play late in the first half as Devin Brown hit Cody Hagen on a corner route in the end zone. The game was tied at 35 with 23 seconds left until the break.

Lone Peak Holds On In Second Half To Beat Corner Canyon

Lone Peak had the ball first in the second half and went all the way down towards the red zone when Comer threw an interception in the end zone. The Knights forced Corner Canyon to punt on their first possession of the half. They had to grind their way down the field and Durfey ran in his second score of the game to give the Knights a 42-35 lead with 1:14 left in the quarter.

Corner Canyon faced a fourth and two at the Lone Peak 12-yard line. On that play, Brown scrambled out of the pocket and somehow found Jon King in the end zone. The game was once again tied at 42 with 9:15 to play in the game.

On third down in Corner Canyon territory, Comer threw a nice ball to McChesney for a touchdown. The Knights took a 49-42 lead with 2:27 to play. When the Chargers started their drive, Brown threw a deep ball with two receivers in the area. One Lone Peak defender tipped it and the other intercepted the pass.

Lone Peak finished their season with a 10-2 record, while Corner Canyon ended the 2021 campaign at 12-2.
