LA Rams Not Tagging Former Utah Kicker Matt Gay, Will Likely Move To Next Team

SALT LAKE CITY – It was announced on Tuesday that the Los Angeles Rams will not be using the franchise or transition tag on Matt Gay.

The Pro-Bowl kicker is likely to draw a lot of free agency attention.

The #Rams are not using the franchise or transition tag on K Matt Gay, source says. One of the most accurate kickers in the league the last few years (60-for-64 in FG attempts the last two), the 2021 Pro Bowl selection is expected to have significant interest as a free agent.

A return in a Rams jersey is not out of the realm of possibility for Gay. But, not getting tagged likely means Los Angeles doesnt want to pay him over $5 million next season.

Gay has made 60 of 64 field goals and 79 of 81 extra points in the last two seasons.

Another team will almost definitely be willing to pay Gay what Los Angeles can’t.

Matt Gay was born in Orem, Utah in 1994. He attended Orem High School from 2008-2012 where he played both soccer and football.

After graduating from high school, he would play soccer for the Utah Valley Wolverines.

In 2017, Gay joined the Utah Utes football team as a walk-on.

As a Ute, he became an All-American and even won the Lou Groza Award. Gay became the first ever Ute to win the award. He led the nation in field goals and set a Pac-12 Conference record with 30 field goals in 2017.

Gay was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
