Casey Scott Reflects On The Darkest Days Of His Life While Staying Positive About The Future

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Every week during the golfing season I am fortunate to hit the links with special guests. Topics of conversation range from personal sporting experiences to life’s hardest challenges. This week a familiar face to the KSL brand joined the show.

Tonigh on KSL Sports I take on Tom Hackett for his segment called The Hallowed Grounds. We go head to head at Ogden Golf & Country Club we practiced social distancing…tune in tonight to see who wins.

Spoiler alert…he won. But that is beside the point. Scott has a message he wants you to hear, and it is a strong one.

Casey Scott was once found on your television sets very early in the morning. He entertained those early birds with his humor and charisma, Scott can make his audience laugh without even intending to. He was the king of morning television.

His on-air personality was thriving, as his face was becoming more and more recognizable throughout the community. Fans would often approach Scott in public asking him one consistent question, “where have I seen you before?” His response every time…” I probably owe you money.”

Then tragedy struck.

On September 2, 2018, Scott was involved in a car accident. Fortunately, he survived, as did the four victims, including two children, that he hit.

Shortly after getting behind the wheel, Scott swerved into the opposing lane hitting an oncoming car head-on.

He was arrested and charged with a DUI for being intoxicated behind the wheel.

Scott quickly put himself into a rehab facility. Although unfortunately, Scott lost everything, including his job. His beloved television role was suddenly gone.

This September will mark the two year anniversary of sobriety for Scott. A massive achievement considering the darkest days of his life were not that long ago.

Shortly following the accident, Scott checked himself into Pinnacle Recovery in Holladay, a rehab facility, where he spent the next 45 days. Those 45 days would ultimately change the way Scott viewed the world.

“The second day there I called my mom and said, ‘Mom, I think I’m in the wrong place.’ I said there are people in here for meth and pain pills and I’m in here for Bud Light,” said Scott. “But I realized my addiction is the same as their addiction. I justified it as my drug dealer is on every corner and every supermarket so mine isn’t really that bad, but when you get down to the simplest form, it’s the same as anybody’s addiction, it’s giving something else some power over you.” Scott said during an interview with KSL 5 TV back in March 2019.

Project Recovery

A few months after leaving Pinnacle Recovery, Scott came back to KSL with an idea. He wanted to start a podcast that is focused on addiction and recovery.

“I wanted to do it with KSL because throughout the whole process they were really good to me, they looked after me. They didn’t just shut the door and walk away, they cared about me,” said Scott.

NO ONE IS PERFECT.

First things first — NO ONE IS PERFECT.We're all dealing with our own demons in OUR OWN WAY and everyday we try to be better than we were the day before. Yes, we've all made mistakes. You either learn from them and move forward or sit on them and let them eat at you. We're all trying to learn the best way to listen and help those who are struggling with addiction or substance abuse but at the end of the day, being able to empathize and start up a conversaition can literally be lifechanging. We need to be better, we need to be kinder, and last but not least, we need to be THERE.Addiction is not a joke. It affects millions of people every year and you may never know how much pain someone is feeling on any given day. Stay tuned for this week's episode…

The podcast, Project Recovery, is focused on real-life addiction and recovery stories. Stories that offer those fighting the fight a ray of hope that maybe one day that can live a healthier, sober lifestyle.

“I know I’ve done some bad things, and I know there are people out there who won’t forgive me,” said Scott. “All I can do is wake up, be the best dad I can, best person I can, and hopefully you’ll come around, and if you don’t, I can’t let it ruin me, I can’t focus my energy on that. I’ve got too many things depending on me.”

Since the podcast first aired, it has gained a tremendous amount of success. It has become one of the most downloaded podcasts on the KSL platform.

Scott shares his story with his own experiences, while also bringing guests on that have also gone through the struggle of addiction.

Real people share their real stories with the world.
