CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University announced that the 2020 Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the 2020 Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games has been canceled,” the university said in a statement. “Utah’s current social distancing requirements prohibiting gatherings of more than 20 people and requiring six feet in social distancing, make it an insurmountable challenge to hold the annual summer games.”

The Summer Games were originally scheduled to take place from June 1-21, 2020, in Cedar City.

“Although we are deeply saddened by this decision, we feel that it is the best thing we can do for the health and safety of our athletes, spectators, and most importantly, our local communities, state and nation,” said executive director of the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games, Pace Clarke. “We want to encourage each of you to find new ways this year to embrace the mission and spirit of the Games by celebrating excellence in the human spirit and healthy lifestyles. Whether it is by doing a service project in your local community, developing a new hobby or skill, or being a more kind and compassionate person, we know as we do our best individually, we can have a significant impact for good that will help give strength to others in this trying time.”

Southern Utah University and Cedar City have hosted the Utah Summer Games since 1986.

The annual Games average nearly 10,000 participants and 30,000 spectators each year.

“We know this is difficult news for athletes across the state and for our local community,” said SUU President Scott L Wyatt. “Cedar City is the most beautiful place to be in the summer and the community is so inviting. Our residents and local businesses help make the Utah Summer Games such an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. We look forward to welcoming the athletes back next year.”

Registered athletes can get a full refund by emailing usg@suu.edu or calling the main office at 435-865-8421.

Coronavirus Resources

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

Common items in question include toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, certain household cleaners, and even cold medicine and baby formula. Authorities are asking anyone who sees price gouging to report it to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection at 801-530-6601 or 800-721-7233.
