SALT LAKE CITY- Jack McBain did most of the work, and Josh Doan was the beneficiary as the Utah Hockey Club takes a 1-0 first-period lead over Tampa Bay.

Utah HC (31-27-11, 73 points) hosts Tampa Bay (40-23-5, 85 points) at Delta Center on Saturday, March 22. The Lightning are fifth in the Eastern Conference, eight points clear of the wild card spots. Utah begins the weekend fifth in the Western Conference Wild Card race. St. Louis holds the final spot with 77 points, followed by Vancouver (76 points) and Calgary (75 points).

Utah is 14-13-7 at home in its inaugural season. The Lightning are 16-15-3 on the road.

Six minutes into the first 20, McBain skated behind the net in control of the puck. With the defense chasing, McBain dumped a no-look pass to Doan in front of the net. The second-year forward ripped a forehand shot past Brandon Halverson for the afternoon’s first points.

It was Doan’s fifth goal. McBain (10) and Lawson Crouse (5) earned assists.

Utah has outshot the ever-dangerous Lightning 4-1 in the first nine minutes.
