SALT LAKE CITY – According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Uyte LLC (the same organization that originally filed for all the Utah Hockey Club names) has applied for and been granted an extension for the Utah Outlaws nickname and several others.
As of April 2, 2025, an application extension was granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Utah Outlaws, Utah Yetis and all of the current Utah Hockey Club logos from the inaugural season.
With the recent application updates, the three final names (Mammoth, Outlaws and Hockey Club) have now all been extended.
Uyte, LLC is the same owner of trademark applications for nicknames related to Utah’s NHL team that were filed in April of 2024.
Some of Uyte, LLC’s previous trademark applications were for names including Utah Ice, Utah Mountaineers, Utah Glaciers, Utah Freeze, Utah Hive, Utah Outlaws, Utah Swarm, Utah Squall, Utah Fury, Utah Blast, Utah Frost, Utah Canyons, Utah Powder, Utah Venom, Utah Yetis, Utah Caribou, Utah Black Diamonds, Utah Blizzard, Utah Mammoth, Utah HC, and Utah Hockey Club.
Following the original fan vote in 2024, the Utah Hockey Club then coordinated an official in-person fan vote during a stretch of home games at Delta Center in late January of 2025.
“Hockey is a community asset,” Smith Entertainment Group executive, Mike Maughan said. “They [Ryan and Ashley Smith] wanted to do something that’s never been done in the history of professional sports, which is invite fans to be part of this incredibly iterative and exciting process to help pick a name.”
“We have such faith in the fanbase here and the people of Utah.”
From January 29 to February 4, fans could vote at the Delta Center for either Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws or Utah Hockey Club.
The patent extension for Mammoth and Utah Hockey Club (without a corresponding logo) was then granted on February 4.
Outlaws and Yeti’s then followed on April 2 when an extension was required.
Looking ahead, the organization will have to respond to the trademark’s non-final actions in early May for Mammoth and Hockey Club.
Meanwhile, they’ll have until early July to respond for Outlaws.
As the team continues to apply for extensions, President of Hockey Operations Chris Armstrong recently shared that the club is still in the process of finalizing their new name.
“We continue to work through our naming process and remain on track to announce the team name ahead of the 2025-26 season,” Armstrong said.
“Every day we get closer but not there yet.”
