Seattle Kraken Hand Utah Hockey Club Disappointing Loss

SALT LAKE CITY—The Utah Hockey Club couldn’t hang on to a second-period lead, surrendering three unanswered goals to close the night in a 3-2 loss to Seattle. 

Utah HC (29-26-11, 69 points) embarks on a three-game road trip, beginning with the Seattle Kraken (29-34-4, 62 pts) on Friday, March 14. Utah and St. Louis started the day two points behind Calgary and Vancouver in a four-team sprint to the final Western Conference Wild Card spot.

The first-year franchise seeks its second consecutive win with 16 regular season games remaining. At 16-12-4, Utah has the tenth-best road record in the NHL this season. Seattle is 15-15-4 at home.

Despite five points in his last four games, Clayton Keller has fallen to 11th in NHL points leaders with 74 (23 goals, 51 assists). The Captain’s four-game streak equals a four-gamer from Barrett Hayton.

Dylan Guenther takes the ice for the first time since his game-winner against Anaheim. It was his eighth game-winner of the year, third-best in the league. Guenther is third on the team with 48 points (24 goals, 24 assists), trailing Nick Schmaltz and his 50 points (15 goals, 35 assists). Former Stanley Cup Champion Mikhail Sergachev is Utah’s top-scoring defenseman with 11 goals and 32 assists for 43 points.

Karel Vejmelka is expected to make his ninth-straight start in goal tonight. Vejmelka is enjoying a career year, sitting ninth in the league with 2.47 goals against. His .909 save percentage is 14th.

Seattle is still looking for its first 50-point scorer, with Chandler Stephenson (11 goals, 34 assists) and Jared McCann (16 goals, 29 assists) leading the way with 45. Jaden Schwartz and Eeli Tolvanen lead Seattle with 19 goals.

Joey Daccord has been Seattle’s top goalie. He is 22-18-3 while allowing 2.68 goals against and a .909 save percentage.

The Kraken are 3-3 in January and 5-5 in their last ten games. Utah is 6-2-2 in its previous ten.
