10-Year Anniversary: Utah Receives Invitation To Pac-10

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It was 10 years ago on June 16 that the University of Utah received their invitation to join the Pac-10 which would ultimately become the Pac-12.

Utah would become the 12th member of the conference after Colorado accepted their invitation. The Utes would leave the Mountain West Conference where they spent 11 seasons and won four conference titles with three being outright championships in football. Utah won a share of the conference title in 1999 before winning the outright championships in 2003, 2004 and 2008.

Since joining the Pac-12, Utah has won two division titles and one co-division title in 2011 but did not appear in the championship game that season.

ESPN wrote a story about the reports of Utah receiving an offer to the Pac-10. University president at the time, Michael Young said that he wasn’t going to make a move of that magnitude without the concurrence of Utah’s board of trustees.

Also included in the ESPN story, Utah did not have pay a penalty to depart the Mountain West Conference.
