LOGAN, Utah- The Utah State Aggies suffered their first Mountain West Conference loss of the season last Wednesday when UNLV closed the game on a 7-0 run to win 65-62.
Going into the matchup with the Runnin’ Rebels, the Aggies were ranked No. 22 in the AP Poll, and despite the loss falling in Quadrant 2, Utah State tumbled out of the Top 25.

While defeat is never desirable, Utah State’s loss to UNLV could turn out to not hurt them much in the long run. The Runnin’ Rebels were hovering around 100 in the NCAA NET Rankings when they beat the Aggies, and they have since moved up to 96 when they followed up their win against USU with their first Quadrant 1 victory on the road over San Diego State.
UNLV will have several more chances to move up in both the NET Rankings and Mountain West Standings with three more Quad 1 and four more Quad 2 games on their schedule as of right now.
The Runnin’ Rebels had their first 20-win season since 2017-18 last year and were given elevated expectations coming into this season. It was a bumpy start to the year but with wins over two of the conference’s premiere basketball programs, UNLV is bound to make some noise in the Mountain West, and if they were to climb up to No. 75 or better in the NET Rankings, Utah State’s loss to UNLV would switch to Quadrant 1.
Utah State’s Next Opportunity To Reenter The Top 25
Two of the Aggies’ next four games will be Quadrant 2 games at home against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Wednesday, January 22, and the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, February 1.
Despite the loss in Las Vegas last Wednesday, Utah State is still receiving votes in the AP Poll and is not far from being nationally ranked once again. Utah State is receiving the second most votes of any team outside the Top 25, trailing only Texas Tech.
