Lauren Gustin Has Big Game As BYU Rolls Through Weber State

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s basketball tipped off its home schedule for the 2023-24 season with a blowout victory over in-state foe Weber State.
The Cougars defeated Weber State 77-49 at “Kids Day” inside the Marriott Center.

BYU was led by preseason All-Big 12 selection Lauren Gustin. The Senior leader scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. It was her first double-double of the season.
Last year, Gustin recorded a program-best 27 double-doubles.
BYU women’s basketball defeats Weber State 77-49
Defensively, BYU suffocated Weber State in the first half. They limited the Wildcats to only 14 points in the first half. From the 1:51 mark of the first quarter to 4:44 left in the second, BYU reeled off an impressive 23-0 run to build a 38-8 lead.
BYU never looked back from there and cruised to its second consecutive victory over a Big Sky foe.
Amari Whiting’s home debut
Freshman guard Amari Whiting followed up her impressive debut at Montana State with another stat-filler, scoring eight points, dishing out four assists and grabbing five rebounds. Another positive from Whiting was that she only committed one turnover. In the opener against the Bobcats, she had seven.

As a team, BYU still committed 16 turnovers, which is a number that needs to go down moving forward.
Starting in the backcourt with Whiting is another freshman, Kailey Woolsten. The first-year standout from Lone Peak High put together another impressive outing, scoring 19 points and shooting 6-of-9 from the field in 31 minutes of action.
BYU shot 56.9% from the field and 50% from three. The only shooting numbers that likely leave head coach Amber Whiting underwhelmed is from the free throw line. BYU was 11-of-21 for a 52.4% clip at the charity stripe.
Weber State, led by first-year head coach and former BYU player Jenteal Jackson, struggled to shoot the ball. They didn’t hit a three-pointer until 3:34 left in the third quarter.
Next up for Weber State, BYU women’s basketball
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host crosstown rival Utah Valley at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Center.
Weber State falls to 0-2 on the young season. Next up for the Wildcats is another road trip to Boise State on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
